Dr. Paul Galstian, an Assistant Clinical Professor at the College and an Associate Doctor at Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island, and his teenage son, Andrew, recently returned from a Medical Mission in Peru. The mission was organized and run by Stony Brook Medical School. Dr. Galstian and Andrew were joined by 18 medical students, a pediatrician and an internist. The group examined patients throughout the Sacred Valley of Peru in orphanages and classrooms at elevations as high at 18,000 feet above sea level. A Long Island ophthalmologist performed 36 cataract surgeries the week before. Dr. Galstian performed the post-operative visits, as well as many other exams while supervising medical students. Andrew helped his father in the eye clinic with fitting children with hundreds of shoes donated by Tom’s Shoes. The trip was a rewarding experience to help poor people and to see a beautiful country in a ways that few tourists have the opportunity.
