Well, another successful cataract surgery mission trip to Ecuador is in the books. Too many unbelievable experiences to show in one post, so I will spread them over a few days. This is a 14 year old boy with a genetic disorder that gave him bilateral cataracts and severe nystagmus in both eyes. We decided to do an exam under anesthesia, and surgery if we thought we could help him. We operated on his worse eye, which could only see light and dark. Here is a preop, intraop, and post op photo. Vision one day after surgery was 20/70! In a subsequent post I will show photos of his 7 year old cousin, who we also operated on. I will never forget these cases!
