This May, 35 volunteer healthcare professionals will travel to Riobamba, Ecuador, to provide those in need with free cataract surgeries and medical (adult & pediatric) services.

Since 2012, Sights on Health’s volunteer surgical team has performed more than 735 sight-restoring surgeries. This extraordinary mission also includes a volunteer medical team that examines adult and pediatric patients, diagnosing and treating a variety of illnesses. Since 2012, more than 15,000 people with limited access to basic healthcare have received cataract surgery and medical and eye care.

It is an indescribable experience to be a part of a mission where lives are changed as a result of having their vision restored & delivered medical treatment to those who do not have access to healthcare.

On Sunday, May 4th, Sights on Health assembled a team of 22 bikers to participate in the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour. They will bike 40 miles throughout Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, all to raise funds to purchase supplies for Sights on Health’s May 2025 mission to Ecuador.

A big thank you to Christina Carmi (RN, Memorial Sloan Kettering) for organizing an NYC Pilates class that raised $600 for our Ecuador mission this upcoming May. And many thanks to SLT Studio (@sltnyc), the wonderful instructor Denita, and all the incredible women who joined in. Your energy is powering our work to bring free cataract surgery and essential medications to those in need. We can’t wait to have Christina on the mission trip this year!

Nicholas Chin’s Commitment to Service Helps Fund Life-Changing Eye Surgeries in South America

Nicholas Chin, a 15 year old student from a high school on Long Island, NY, decided this past summer to create a GoFundMe Page to raise money to support Sights on Health’s goal of providing free cataract surgery to those in need in South America. Since the summer, his GoFundMe page has raised $2,035 for Sights on Health!

Nicholas has been such an amazing supporter of our cause! He was inspired to support SoH because of vision challenges experienced by close family members and he has become committed to the service aspect of medicine through his membership in a school club. Sights on Health thanks him for his enthusiasm to assist in providing funds for the upcoming May Mission to Riobamba, Ecuador…… way to go Nicholas!!!

We are preparing for our Cataract Surgical & Medical Mission 2025 Riobamba, Ecuador. Would you like to join our team?

May 16-23, 2025
Flights: Round trip JFK-Quito, Ecuador
We are accepting donations to our paypal to cover the coast of airfare for the team.

Volunteers needed

Medicine team: they will travel to communities for 4 to 5 days

3-4 MDS of various specialties
1-2RNs
1pharmacist
1 optometrist & 1 ophthalmic tech
1-2 medical residents & 1-2 medical students
1 administrative assistant
2 translators

Surgical Eye Team: the surgical patients will have already been selected, the team will operate out of Fibuspam Hospital

2-3 ophthalmic surgeons
2-3 RNSs or CSTs for OR with ophthalmic experience
2-3 floaters for OR
1 ophthalmology resident
1-2 anesthesiologists or critical care physicians
1 preop/postop RN
1 sterilization tech
1 administrative assistant
2 translators

There will be an opportunity to visit the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon or hiking Cotopaxi after the mission is completed. There will be a travel agent who can guide you through the process. Otherwise, you can return with the main group on May 23rd.

Sights on Health has distributed 1,600 pairs of their socks to:

~525 pairs to people living on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota

~ 100 pairs to Huntington Family Service League, NY for homeless men, housed in a local motel

~ 400 pairs to a NYC Homeless ministry

~ 600 pairs to a Homeless Shelter in Riverhead, NY

The results are in from Sunday’s 5 Boro Bike Tour through NYC…..16 cyclists rode a total of 640 miles on behalf of Sights on Health… that’s the equivalent of a road trip from Astoria, Queens to Wilmington, North Carolina (643 miles)… that’s a LOT of miles. Our cyclists did an amazing job: not only cycling on a perfect sunny day but raising just over $11,000 for Sights on Health.

If you would like to show your support for our team and Sights on Health, please consider making a donation to help purchase cataract surgical and medical supplies for the upcoming mission to Ecuador on October 7-14, 2023. The surgical team will provide free sight-restoring cataract surgery to 75 patients & the medical team will travel to villages to provide care to children & adults.

The surgical team will provide free sight-restoring cataract surgery to 75 patients & the medical team will travel to villages to provide care to children & adults.

Happy Holidays! 2022 has been a busy year for Sights on Health as we celebrated our TENTH ANNIVERSARY. Below are the year’s highlights…

SOH provided three months of medical supplies to more than 40,000 Ukrainians
Our team bicycled 42 miles through the five boroughs of NYC raising $37,068.83 to purchase Interagency Emergency Health Kits through Project Hope.
Our thoughts go out to the Ukrainians as they face this winter still at war, with limited access to the basic necessities such as heat and electricity.
SoH provided 1,000 pairs of sunglasses
1,000 pairs of sunglasses were donated to the residents of Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota through AFWP NATIVE EYES Clinic
SoH Cataract Surgical Mission to Calca, Peru – 1st mission since the pandemic!

Sights on Health celebrated its 10th Anniversary by returning to the Sacred Valley, Peru where we held our first surgical mission in 2012. Over 90 patients were screened & 50 patients were brought to the operating room to give them back one of the 5 senses we take for granted every morning when we open our eyes… sight. The patient screening, post operative care & in country support could not have been done without the assistance of our longtime colleagues from FNE International, Asociacion Winaypaq & CEPRECE Eye Clinic. This surgical mission could not have been done without our very gracious supporters and volunteers who made this mission possible! For a complete list of donors click here. The mission was a costly endeavor; close to $70,000 of cataract surgical supplies were donated & $24,000 was spent by SoH to purchase the remaining supplies & provide the logistical support necessary to make this a success.

It is difficult to describe the sense of satisfaction felt by our mission participants; to be able to return to providing eye surgery to those unable to have access to cataract surgery, is truly heartwarming. Please consider making an end of the year donation. Mission planning will start in early 2023 and your financial support is critical to our efforts.

NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour In Support Of Medical Supplies For Ukraine

Dear friends and supporters of Sights on Health,

Sights on Health has formed a team to bicycle 42 miles through the five boroughs of NYC on May 1st as part of the annual 5 Boro Bike Tour. Help us raise money to provide much-needed medical supplies to the people suffering in Ukraine and any donation will help make an impact. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to organizations vetted by Sights on Health who are on the ground in Ukraine and its neighboring countries actively supplying medical supplies and support.

It seems the world continues to present all of us with one crisis after another these past few years and with an increased frequency and intensity. When we started the nonprofit organization ten years ago, our mission was committed to providing quality, compassionate care for those whose geographical and/or social status limit their access to medical care. None of us would have envisioned the need to provide medical assistance to a country such as Ukraine. Where their people are experiencing death, destruction & devastation from an invasion by a neighboring country.
