Sights on Health was able to have a significant effect on so many people’s lives on this past mission to Cuzco, Peru. One story that comes to mind that had all of us so touched was about a 30-year-old patient. Due to a childhood illness he was deaf and in his early teenage years he developed bilateral cataracts. His world had become so isolated between being deaf and blind. Dr Michael Sable, SoH’s surgical director examined him and performed cataract surgery the first day we arrived to work at the Ceprece clinic in Cuzco. As he read the eye chart the first day after his surgery, there was not a dry eye in the clinic. All of the SoH team shared in his joy. On the last day of the surgical mission, Dr. Sable performed surgery on his second eye. Today, he has his sight restored to both eyes. He was once again able to read the eye chart and he is able to sign with his family again now that he is able to see. Changing the life of not just one person, but of his two young children and his wife who is also deaf.

Our mission concluded May 24, Sights on Health was able to perform a total of 78 cataract surgeries, 6 yag laser posterior capsulotomy ( removal of secondary cataract ) and 1 pterygium excision. These sight restoring procedures were done as part of this extraordinary 2024 mission to Peru In addition, we saw 250 adults and pediatric patients, and the medical team was able to help diagnose and treat a variety of illnesses and diseases. That’s over 325 lives we’ve been able to impact because of the Sights On Health team, the FNE International team, and the Asociación Wiñaypaq Pro Desarrollo Humano team. We have had a collaborative effort between our nonprofit organizations since 2012.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of LATAM, our team of 22 members had their second luggage fee waived for all four flights for the round trip: NY to Lima, Lima to Cuzco. That meant our fundraising dollars were spent on purchasing the necessary medical supplies & eye surgical supplies rather than paying luggage fees as our team transported a portable medical clinic and portable operating room from NY to Cuzco. We thank LATAM & Daniel Rochefort Vuletin and Ambassador Maria Landaveri for supporting our important philanthropic work.

Sight On Health In Peru – Day-to-day!

Day 1 (Started 1 day early to start making patients happy!) setting up and our first successful patient of the day!

A dozen obstacles overcome and another dozen of patients DONE! Restored sight to 12 very special patients! And our very first patient of this mission came back for her next day follow up! Look at that smile! Thank you to all of our supporters. With your kindness we can really help those less fortunate!

Day 2 Pre-op evaluations and sterilization area This is a great team!

Day 3 – Smooth day in the OR but so many patients evaluated today in the screening area! It was a wild day of bus loads of people coming in to be screened from mountain communities with NO resources! Shout out to our screening team! Dave Krebs, Ana, Jhon, Andy, Flo, George, Tatiana, Cipoletti, Vero, and Jessica! Bam Bam Bam! All taken care of!

Day 4 - in Calca, Peru. 88 patients evaluated and 50 patients went to the OR. There were some hairy times… and some great high fives. For all our past, present and future supporters… this is where your love lifts people up!!!

Shout out! – Today’s shout out goes to the administrative team that organizes this. Although we are but a small part of this whole organization, they work tirelessly year round to make this happen. Without our surgical team (mentioned on Tuesday) and our screening and registration team (mentioned on Weds) we would do nothing…

The admin team starts with Dr Debra Messina, our fearless president. Dr Joseph Ng, VP, Andy Maggiolo, Treasurer, Kenneth Roberts, Secretary, Dr George Coritsidis,Board Member, James Rienzo, Board Member, and Michael Sable Surgical Director. Dr. Frilo Silva from Cusco, Peru who has donated time and loaned us the equipment to make this possible and Dr Francisco Morales who, through his contacts helped spread the word and help us get our logistics planned out. FNE International, who was our boots on the ground who help cut through a lot of the bureaucracy.

Day 5 – It’s a wrap!!! We are done and packed as of early this afternoon… now to relax a bit, sight see and celebrate that we did some good in this world with all of our supporters help. Thank you all and see you all back home!

18 suitcases and 5 carry on’s are packed and ready to transport a portable operating room & eye clinic from NY to Peru. There are enough supplies to provide 50 cataract surgeries, free of charge to those in need of this sight restoring surgery. In the photo below, Dr Francisco Morales, one of our partners was interviewed this week on the local radio and tv of the Urubamba – Ollantaytambo area in the Sacred Valley, Peru to talk about Sights on Health’s October 16-22 cataract surgical mission at the Ministry of Health’s clinic in Calca.

Sights on Health, Inc. is celebrating its ten-year anniversary since their first cataract surgical mission to Peru by returning to Calca in the Sacred Valley, October 14-23, 2022 for its first cataract surgical mission since the start of the pandemic.

It will be a smaller group than in years past- a team of 13 people will transport via commercial airlines donated surgical supplies for 50 sight restoring surgeries, along with equipment to set up a portable eye clinic and operating room in a local health outpost in the remote village of Calca in the Sacred Valley, Peru.

Sights on Health is working with the Peruvian Ministry of Health, FNE International, Asociacion Winaypaq, Ceprece -Cusco Eye Clinic, Yanapana Peru, Alcon & Surgical Eye Expeditions to provide sight restorative cataract surgery to the underserved indigenous population, free of charge.

Pre-screening by our Peruvian team for surgical patients in remote villages in the Andes Mountains has already begun.

We are accepting monetary donations to purchase specific surgical supplies still needed. All donations are tax deductible.

Keeping our Sights on Health

Sights on Health assists the elderly of Peru who are suffering for lack of medications. The pandemic has stretched the already thin medical resources in this country beyond the breaking point. Dr. Francisco Morales whom we have had the privilege of working with down in Peru has reached out for support for his elderly patients in the Sacred Valley. Our board responded with a $500 donation to help provide life saving medications.

As the pandemic continues to have a devastating affect on many regions in Peru, Sights on Health has donated $1,000 to FNE International to purchase necessary personal protective equipment for Dr Francisco Morales and his staff at Asociacion Winaypaq, Cuzco https://www.asociacionwinaypaq.org/426994404. The donation was tripled by a match from Apple.

Dr. Morales left yesterday from Calca to travel to the jungles of Yanatile. We wish the team a safe trip as they provide medical care to the most needy in Peru’s rural health posts. Our thoughts are with our friends in Peru…
